On the date that marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, a college of Sao Paulo set up an action to remember the date. The students attended the event in Interlagos, in the city of São Paulo, which stood out with a collective peace gesture.

According to Humboldt College, the gesture of peace is “reaffirming the commitment of the school community to the preservation of historical memory and the values of empathy, respect and peaceful coexistence”.

The date is celebrated throughout Germany as “Tag Der Befreiung”, or Liberation Day, marking the surrender of the Nazis and the end of the regime that oppressed and violated human rights.

The position of then federal president Richard von Weizsäcker in 1985 in stating that the date is a date of “liberation from a system of enemy tyranny of humanity,” reinforced the important role of history as a way of learning and ethically understanding what happened.

For Brazil, the end of the war also great importance. The country, according to Humboldt, welcomed immigrants from the entire postwar Europe, leading to a society rich in various cultures and trajectories.

“The symbol of peace appeared in the postwar as a protest against nuclear weapons and, over time, won the world as a sign of hope,” said the college, which concluded by telling that “this symbol is here to remind us that peace is possible and that it begins with each of us.”
