With a “zero waste” store plan, Carrefour signs the Pact Against Hunger

The Carrefour Brasil Group became a signatory of the Pact Against Hunger movement. The announcement was made this Tuesday (17), in the week in which World Food Day is celebrated.

The aim is to help the country leave the hunger map by 2030. Among the projects designed together is the creation of two stores in which there will be no loss of food.

According to Maria Alicia Lima, vice president of institutional relations, ESG and communication at Grupo Carrefour Brasil, the focus is on ending waste. “Our objective with the Pact is to initially develop two pilot stores that we call ‘zero waste’, where all the food that is suitable for consumption, instead of going to landfill, can actually be destined for donation. In principle, we will start with São Paulo and Ceará”, she explained.

Businesswoman, co-founder and president of the board of Pacto Contra a Fome Geyze Diniz celebrated the group’s arrival into the movement.

“How Carrefour has also embraced the cause of fighting hunger and takes this look at food waste. It has a lot of synergy with the Pact Against Hunger. We are very happy with this partnership, grateful for the openness to make this connection. I’m sure this will be a very good way to exchange things too.”

To kick off the partnership, Carrefour will promote an incentive day for donations. Next Saturday (21), the group will donate one kilo of food for every kilo donated by customers at Sam’s Club and Atacadão stores. The group, which donated 10 million complementary meals in 2022, aims to reach 16 million in 2023. “In 2026, we want to reach 40 million complementary meals donated”, highlighted Maria Alicia.

According to Rede Penssan, 33 million Brazilians are hungry in Brazil. “Let’s look at this issue of hunger. It exists, it is serious, it hurts. Hunger is suffered, and we have to think about what country we want. If we want a developed country, let’s look at this issue, especially early childhood nutrition”, warned Geyze Diniz.

On October 26, the Pact Against Hunger Award will be awarded to six initiatives, in cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO ).

The award aims to give visibility and recognize initiatives that help combat hunger and combat food waste. The winners will receive R$100,000 each.
