With about 80 million adherents in the world, veganism spreads across NY

About 80 million people consider themselves vegans in the world, according to estimates. In New York, in the United States, the options that cater to the public have spread from renowned restaurants to options sold in streets to parks.

The expansion of the movement is even seen in the city’s public policies, with the municipal network of schools offering only vegan food on Fridays. In addition, on Mondays, students consume vegetarian meals (which do not have meat, but can include other animal derivatives, such as milk and eggs).

In the second episode of the third season of Between worlds to be shown this Sunday (20) at 10:30 pm, Pedro Andrade enters New York’s vegan community to understand whether the phenomenon could be the beginning of a food revolution or is nothing more than a gastronomic fad.

One of the most prominent activists for the cause in the area, vegan chef and Sri Lankan immigrant Thriu Kumar is known for the meals he sells in Washington Square Park.

“All kinds of people come here and we have a fan club around the world. I meet people from all over the world every day, people of all kinds,” he says.

Kumar points out that what he does is not just selling food, but “showing how good veganism is for the world. So I’m happy, everyone is happy and the entire Village community is happy with me here”.

Reflecting on the possibility that one day vegans will represent the majority of the population, nutritionist and author Twyce McQuirter says: “it means healthier people, who live longer, that people have access to healthier food and it also means that animals will be safe , that our forests will be safe, that the fish will come back and that the oceans will be healthier. And that means we’re helping to lower the risk of global warming.”

Entre Mundos is shown on Sundays at 10:30 pm on CNN and on digital platforms.
