With back pain, Queen Elizabeth II cancels participation in event

Queen Elizabeth II will not be able to attend the Remembrance Day ceremony in London this Sunday (14), in what would be her first public engagement since being advised to rest after a night in hospital last month.

“The Queen, after experiencing back pain, decided this morning with great regret that she will not be able to attend the Sunday Remembrance Service. Her Majesty is disappointed to lose the service,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement;

The world’s oldest monarch was admitted to “preliminary investigations” into an unspecified disease and has since missed events such as COP26 and a festival to remember the country’s war dead this Saturday night (13).

While the Queen has participated in online engagements, the palace had said she, at age 95, was determined to appear in person at the Cenotaph monument, where members of the royal family join government, military and veterans to honor those who have lost their lives in conflict.

Held the Sunday closest to November 11 to commemorate the end of World War I, the Queen’s presence at the annual event is one of the defining images of her 69-year reign: head bowed, wearing black and sporting a red poppy.

Elizabeth was expected on the balcony of the Foreign Office in central London, while her son and heir to the throne, Prince Charles, will lay a wreath in her name.
