With bureaucracy as an ally, twenty “naughty” cows… escaped and roam free in Quebec

Not a day goes by without them making an appearance in the news: some 20 “naughty” cows made it to the Quebec and to this day no one has been able to catch them, not even the cowboys who were specially called to bring them back to order.

All they started the summer in Saint-Barnabe, in the Morrissey area, an hour and a half north of Montreal. The cows took advantage of an opening in their fence, escaped and took refuge in a dense, impenetrable forest in the neighboring commune of Saint-Sever. They spend the day there and come out at night to graze in fields where soybeans and corn are grown, destroying a portion of the crop.

During the day, they hide in the forest but come out as soon as it gets dark, they approach buildings, open sacks, they try to eat the crop“, explained Marie-André Cantoret, who works in the municipality.

“We managed to collect them but the things they took a bad turn when we got to a big field of corn that hadn’t even been picked and we lost it there,” said Sylvain Bourgeois, the rodeo director at the Western Festival, who took over the “business.”
Quebec’s Ministry of Agriculture finally decided to step in to deal with this “complex and unprecedented” case. So, a new business will be set up, this time to lure the cows by offering them food. However, their owner hopes that they will be “convinced” to return to the stable when the weather cools down and the first snow falls, as reported by the Athens News Agency.
