With cancer, King Charles says that disease showed him the best of humanity

King Charles III of the United Kingdom said on Wednesday that the diagnosis of cancer was an experience that showed him “the best of humanity”-in a message celebrating the work of support groups and charities for people with cancer.

Buckingham Palace said in February 2024 that Charles had been diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer, detected in exams after an increased prostate corrective procedure.

He has been receiving treatment since then and returned to public activities for a year.

Although updates on their health status were rare, a source from Buckingham Palace in December that treatment was evolving positively.

Charles used a message for participants in a reception dedicated to the work of support groups and charities for people with cancer to share their experiences with the disease.

“Each diagnosis, every new case, will be an intimidating and sometimes scary experience for these individuals and their loved ones,” he said in the message published by the palace.

“But as one of these statistics, I can guarantee that this can also be an experience that focuses on the best of humanity,” he added.

Charles, 76, thanked the charity institutions for the work of raising funds for research and reflected on the value of the human connection they offer patients in times of necessity.

“This certainly gave me an even deeper appreciation of the extraordinary work done by the remarkable organizations and individuals gathered here tonight, many of which I have known, visited and supported over the years,” said Charles.

“And it reinforced what I have been observed for a long time during these visits: that the darkest moments of the disease can be illuminated by greater compassion,” he concluded.
