With economic indices worsening, Bolsonaro tries to regain business support

As the electoral dispute approached, President Jair Bolsonaro was advised by leaders of the allied base to resume a closer dialogue with the business sector.

In recent weeks, leaders of the Centrão bloc have received a diagnosis from businessmen and industrialists of a dismay with the current administration, especially given the paralysis of the reform agenda and the increase in inflation rates.

Second report made to CNN Brasil by two government aides, the message was transmitted earlier this week to Palácio do Planalto, which intends to promote the president’s agendas with the business segment by the end of the month.

The first of them is scheduled for next Wednesday (15th). The federal government will promote an event, called Moderniza Brasil, to announce measures to improve the business environment in the country.

According to government officials, businessmen and industrialists were invited to the event, which will take place at the headquarters of Fiesp (Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo).

The idea is that, at the end of the month, the president will have a meeting, also in São Paulo, with big businessmen. The proposal is that, at the meeting, he anticipates economic measures that he intends to implement next year.

Planalto Palace’s concern is also due to the initial euphoria in the financial market with the candidacy of former federal judge Sergio Moro. A survey promoted by XP Investimentos showed that, today, the economic segment assesses that Moro would be better than Bolsonaro for financial assets.

This Friday (10), the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) informed that the Broad Consumer Price Index (IPCA) – which measures the country’s official inflation – was 0.95%. Despite having shown a deceleration, the value is the highest for the month since 2015 and, in the accumulated in 12 months, the median of the estimates indicated an increase of 10.9%.

The fear at the Palácio do Planalto is that an accumulated rise in excess of double digits, as it should close this year, could serve as an Achilles’ heel in the presidential race.
