China’s military said it had increased the number of military exercises near Taiwan on Monday, as a group of US lawmakers visited the island and met with President Tsai Ing-wen, in what Beijing said was a violation of its sovereignty.
A US congressional delegation led by Senator Ed Markey landed in Taiwan yesterday for a two-day visit, the second high-level visit recently, after that of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in early August that led to an increase in tensions with China.
As reported by Reuters, the Chinese military unit in charge of the area next to Taiwan said today it carried out multi-body combat readiness patrols and combat exercises in the sea and air around Taiwan.
The drills are “a stern message of deterrence to the United States and Taiwan that continue to play political games and undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait,” China’s Eastern Military Command said in a statement.
In its own statement, China’s defense ministry said the US lawmakers’ trip violated China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and “fully exposes the true face of the United States as a destroyer of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.”
“The Chinese People’s Liberation Army continues to train and prepare for war, resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and will resolutely crush any form of ‘Taiwan independence’ separatism and foreign interference,” it added.
Neither of the two announcements, however, mentioned more details about the exercises.
