Brazil recorded a new record in the slaughter of chickens and pigs in 2021. Over the past year, there were 6.18 billion birds, the best performance of the entire historical series started in 1997. Regarding swine, there were 52.97 million, an unprecedented feat for the category. The data were released this Tuesday (15) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
The two results represent, respectively, an increase of 2.8% and 7.3% compared to 2020. Altogether, national livestock added 169.87 million more chickens slaughtered and an increase of 3.61 million swine .
This positive situation was influenced both by the increase in exports and by the growth of domestic consumption. The survey analyst, Bernardo Viscardi, points out that the more expensive beef in the markets led Brazilians to opt for substitutes that fit in their pockets. “Both chicken and pork have become a more affordable protein option”, he highlights.
On the other hand, Brazilian beef production had its second consecutive annual decline. In all, 27.54 million heads were slaughtered last year. This means a decrease of 7.8% compared to the performance of 2020.
The losses in the branch are explained, in particular, by the animal retention scenario. Statistics from the IBGE’s Monthly Industrial Survey show that, with the above-normal appreciation in the average price of calves and cattle arroba, fewer females were slaughtered due to reproductive activity.
Viscardi highlights the importance of breeding in the final numbers. “the at sign [do boi] is valued, in a high cycle, causing the producer to avoid slaughter”, he explains.
In 12 months, 9.31 million females were slaughtered in Brazil, the lowest number since 2004.
The restriction imposed by the Chinese market was also a key point in the beef chain in 2021. “China is the main importer of Brazilian beef and was responsible for more than 50% of national exports.
In September of last year, however, when two atypical cases of mad cow disease were found, the Asian country embargoed meat from Brazil. Shipments were released in December.
