James Gunn updated his plans for the next phase of the DC Universe this Tuesday (31) via a video posted on Twitter.
Gunn – who became co-CEO of DC Studios with Peter Safran last year – has unveiled several new titles, including a new Superman movie slated for 2025 titled “Superman: Legacy” and production “The Brave and the Bold,” which features “Batman and Robin in this offbeat father-son story inspired by Grant Morrison’s comic book series.”
“Superman: Legacy,” which will take place without actor Henry Cavill, “will focus on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing,” according to DC’s announcement.
Other movies are a sci-fi one titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” and another horror-themed one for the character Swamp Thing.
As for TV series, the new Gunn-led team presents “Waller,” starring Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, who appeared in the “Suicide Squad” movies as well as last year’s “Peacemaker” series on HBO Max.
In his video, the filmmaker explained that the studio’s plans are part of an effort to make the DC Universe more cohesive, with the same actors playing characters with celebrated legacies in film and television.
He cited the studio’s upcoming films as the way the entire superhero universe will be “rebooted”, thus allowing for new content and new versions of famous characters, starting with “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” and “The Flash” in June.
Gunn also specified that other ongoing DC content — such as new series and sequels based on last year’s Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” and Todd Phillips’ “Joker” sequel — are distinct from the DC Universe and , in fact, are part of something called DC Elseworlds.
