With Ômicron and without parades, 2022 Carnival will move 33% less, says CNC

Still impacted by Covid-19 and the cancellation of parades in the main Brazilian capitals, the 2022 Carnival should move a 33% lower value, when compared to the same holiday in 2020, before the pandemic was decreed by the World Health Organization (WHO) .

The data are part of the estimate made by the National Confederation of Commerce in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC), released this Monday (14).

In absolute values, the 2022 Carnival will have revenues close to R$ 6.45 billion. Before the health crisis, the national event used to generate, on average, R$ 9.5 billion in revenue.

According to CNC’s projection, the segment of bars and restaurants should turn R$ 2.78 billion. Road passenger transport (R$ 1.55 billion) and accommodation services (R$ 660 million) appear in second and third position, respectively, among the most representative segments for the event’s revenue.

This result is related to the fear of the Ômicron variant and the cancellation of the parades in the sambadrome.

A survey of CNN Agency shows that 24 capitals and the Federal District have already officially announced that this year’s Carnival has been suspended or postponed.

Among them are Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Salvador, cities that concentrate the main parties in Brazil.

In addition, the research cites the lower purchasing power among Brazilians, due to the current economic scenario.

Inflation and political instability are the two main reasons suggested by the survey carried out by the CNC.

“The slowdown of the pandemic and the fall in social isolation over the past year made possible the gradual recovery of economic activity in the sector. However, the adverse impacts resulting from the deterioration of economic conditions and, mainly, the arrival of a new variant of the new coronavirus began to limit the pace of recovery in the sector at the end of last year”, highlights an excerpt from the study.

Economists heard by the CNN explain that the inflation of some items will help reduce Carnival revenue in 2022.

Using IBGE data, they highlight the cost of airline tickets and alcoholic beverages, which, impacted by the indicator, grew 23.4% and 12.8%.
