Amid successive price increases, the main proteins that make up the Brazilian dish have given way to pork. Among beef, chicken, fish and even eggs, swine escape the impacts of inflation. In the month of May, the Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), recorded a 5.52% drop in pork in the last 12 months.
The grouping of birds and eggs adds up to a 20.36% increase in the same period. Only eggs had an increase of 18.39% and chicken pieces, 22.71%. Among red meats, items such as sirloin, sirloin steak and filet mignon registered 13.18%, 9.88% and 9.43% increases in prices, respectively. The fish also became more expensive in the last 12 months, about 5.41% increase.
The chief economist at the agro consultancy Safras & Mercado, Fernando Iglesias, explains that the exchange rate has favored the export of meat and, therefore, the domestic price is affected by the low supply.
“When we have this aggressive export of beef and an export of chicken that is doing very well in the year 2022, prices escalate and the dynamic is to opt for other proteins such as eggs and pork”, highlighted the economist.
A study by the Brazilian Institute of Planning and Taxation (IBPT) went further and verified how much market products, such as proteins, have risen since the beginning of the pandemic and how much this value is above the official inflation for the period – 19.9% since March 2020.
The survey revealed that the egg is the product that has shown the biggest price change since the beginning of the pandemic. The dozen registered a rise of 202.13% above official inflation, with the card going from R$6.99, in March 2020, to R$22.51 in May this year.
“This increase in eggs mainly affects the lower-income population, who already had difficulty buying other proteins, such as red meat, and already had eggs as their main protein. Pork is coming out cheaper”, said João Eloi Olenike, executive president of the IBPT.
The IBPT study also pointed out that the kilo of beef and the kilo of chicken registered increases of 91.11% and 70.08%, respectively, above the official inflation of 19.9% in just over two years.
