With rain and winds of 70 km/h, Santos Dumont has at least 32 flights canceled

Santos Dumont airport, in Rio de Janeiro, experienced another day of inconvenience after the cancellation of at least 32 flights on the night of this Wednesday (15). The reason was the winds that reached 70 km/h between 19:00 and 20:00.

According to the Alerta Rio system, from the city hall of the capital of Rio de Janeiro, the intensity of the winds was strong, the penultimate scale for the meteorological phenomenon. The municipality’s Operations Center also reported that they were the strongest gusts in the entire month of February.

Among the 16 aircraft that did not take off were destinations such as São Paulo, Brasília, Curitiba, Goiânia, Florianópolis and Campinas. Another 16 flights that were expected to arrive after 6:30 pm and had to divert or did not even take off. They originated from cities like Porto Alegre, Brasília, São Paulo, Florianópolis, Cuiabá, Recife and Vitória.

The rains that have hit Rio de Janeiro have already left at least eight dead in the state over the past two months. The city entered the mobilization stage at 6:30 pm. This was the second of five risk stages.

At least 15 trees fell in the city, two on wirings and one on a concrete structure. The Operations Center also points to 14 locations with records of flooding.
