With suites and TVs in cells, Norwegian prison has lowest European recidivism rate

In Halden, Norway, authorities conceived the construction of a new model of maximum security prison.

Considered the most “humane” penitentiary in the world, the Norwegian prison opens the discussion on the old model of incarceration. In the Norwegian penitentiary, the recidivism rate of ex-prisoners is 20% in two years — the lowest in Europe.

It is there that Pedro Andrade embarks on the premiere episode of the third season of Entre Mundos, to be shown this Sunday (13).

In the cells, there are comfort structures for inmates, such as suites and flat-screen televisions. Even with the perks, the inmates occupy the rooms only at night. Between 7:30 am and 8:30 pm, they can use game rooms and apartment-style common areas.

In addition to the physical differences, Halden’s prison is innovative in its mission. Rather than punishing, the framework was designed to reinstate men convicted of violent crimes such as murder and rape.

There are 344 employees working at the site (including guards, teachers, therapists, among others) and 245 people are serving time.

The first episode of the new season of Between worlds will be shown this Sunday (13), at 10:30 pm, on CNN and on digital platforms.
