With the return of federal taxes, gasoline should rise by R$ 0.68 per liter, says Abicom

On the eve of the end of the tax relief on gasoline and ethanol, which ends on March 1, the president of Petrobras, Jean Paul Prates, will meet at the end of the afternoon of this Thursday (23) with the President of the Republic , Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Without the extension of the exemption, gasoline should increase by R$ 0.68 per liter at gas stations, calculates the Brazilian Association of Fuel Importers (Abicom).

The increase should happen at a time when Petrobras has some fat to burn, for charging higher prices than the international market. Its main competitor in Brazil, the Mataripe Refinery, in Bahia, last Wednesday reduced the price of gasoline by R$ 0.29 per liter.

In Abicom’s accounts, without the extension of the exemption, the impact of the return of taxes on the price of gasoline at refineries will be R$ 0.79 for PIS/Cofins and R$ 0.10 for Cide.

At gas stations, after mixing ethanol, the total impact of tax return on gasoline will be R$ 0.68 per liter. Already hydrated ethanol, with a mixture of 27% per liter of gasoline, should rise R$ 0.24 per liter at gas stations.

In comparison with the prices practiced in the international market, the sale of gasoline in Petrobras refineries is on average 8% more expensive, while diesel is priced 7% higher.

This difference corresponds to a possible drop of R$ 0.23 per liter in the case of gasoline and R$ 0.25 in diesel.

If only the Bahia market is taken into account, where it operates from the only relevant private refinery, the Mataripe Refinery, the increase in relation to the foreign market reaches 10%, informs Abicom, even after last week’s reduction.
