Honestly, the classic Hunter with the “Loaf” to me, like to many, is sweet in appearance. You can say as much as you like that you can’t do this anymore, and so on, but there is demand and UAZ, in general, is doing well, which tells us that there are still many places and people where these cars are in demand. Just don’t judge by big cities.

Patriot, on the contrary, is trying to look younger, but it lacks charisma and some nice details in the exterior. Although the web is full of fan sketches, which perfectly show that it is possible to draw a fresh design with references to history. And the current model has gone far from the early version of Simbir. I think you can not say that they like to install additional equipment and various body kit on the car. I don’t see the point in telling the whole story of the UAZ flagship. So I’ll tell you from the position of “the first time I see.” And I’ll start from the back. Opening the tailgate (to the side, and not, as in the Hunter, with a folding side), I was stunned, as they say. The luggage compartment is simply huge with almost the correct square shape along the contour. 650 liters of volume are declared and four times the volume with the seats folded down … in general, I don’t want to load. By the way, in the trunk there is a curtain and a cigarette lighter socket. And I would recommend putting a powerful lamp here, since the compartment is huge and nothing is visible at night.

I put the seats back and climbed into the second row. Here it is immediately striking that both rows of seats seem to be shifted back relative to the racks. That is, you always find yourself with your shoulder no longer at the window, but a little deeper back. Unusual. So, the passengers of the second row are waiting for: a lot of space, their own heater (it does not depend on the main one and fries from the heart) with heated seats and a folding armrest in the center. Everything is like people. The heater, however, is very noisy even at the first of the two speeds. And rear passengers also have excellent visibility, since, in general, the Patriot has an excellent glass area and no beveled windows.

Under the chairs there is also a place for things that are not the most in demand in everyday life.

The evolutionary process in the Patriot’s cabin is most noticeable from the front. If you saw a car at the dawn of its appearance, now, in the top-end configuration, it is already a solid and complete device. Look, there are: front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera (hidden by the room), there is even cruise control and multimedia. The windows are all electric, as are the side mirrors. There is also a heated windshield (mesh), and steering wheel adjustment for reach and height. A mechanical lumbar support is also present.

About the tablet on Android (version 7), what is responsible for multimedia here. The content, in general, is standard: radio, Bluetooth, there is an off-road menu with a slope, rolls and the like, and … a browser. It even allows you to play video, which other cars do not allow you to do. Yes, you can turn on the hotspot on your smartphone and surf through the auto screen. Why and who will do it, I do not know, but there is a possibility. But Car Play and Android Auto are not supported. The screen as a whole is somewhat faded, but smart. And, there is still navigation from Navitel.

What was missing most about using the cabin was a USB port within easy reach. The only one there is in the glove compartment. The latter, by the way, with cooling! Another would be a rubberized pocket for a smartphone, otherwise it flies in this plastic with a bang. Well, in general, there is a lot of room for customization and small tweaks. The same cup holder should be equipped with a latch. UAZ loves to jump.

I’ll be honest, UAZ Patriot has something to praise. First, it’s a great visibility. A high seating position thanks to the frame and a large glass area help here. By the way, the level of the windows here is absolutely even. Secondly, it is the amount of space inside. There are cars that look big, but there is not enough space inside. Here it’s the other way around. And the trunk does seem incredible even thanks to the correct shape.

I can’t help but notice the steering wheel. For some reason, he reminded me of the one in the Mitsubishi L200 that I had on the test not so long ago. On the spokes control units for music and cruise control with a speed limiter. On the left lever is the control of a small on-board computer on the tidy.

And, everything seems to be fine, and the equipment is solid and everything is on the level, but many elements are controversial. Multimedia is somewhat outdated, the screen on the tidy from the last century and only one USB connector. Well, the general condity of the cabin, especially in the matter of plastic. But, you know, it’s easier with him, and there is a certain balance in all this, since the Patriot is one hundred percent for the exit from the asphalt, and there are no more frills … well, it’s time to go.

And here, that suddenly, it blooms. The engine with the automatic gearbox is a little thoughtful, but, surprisingly, they have enough power. Although the UAZ flagship weighs about two tons. Since we are talking about dynamics, I cannot fail to mention that by default there is rear-wheel drive, and on a winter road it easily goes into a skid. Use all wheel drive. And then there is the ESP, and if you turn it off, it really turns off. You can have some fun. The Patriot is cool, right?

The body mounted on the frame, although it has steps, but skill when landing is required at first. The doors are large, there are no other difficulties with landing. It is also easy to sit comfortably here, the front seats are mechanically adjustable. I also note that the side mirrors are healthy and can be clearly seen in them. The right one, however, began to vibrate a little on the track, but the asphalt was not the best either.

It’s noisy on the highway, especially on the second row when there’s nothing in the trunk. Noise is generally the main complaint about this car. And if Hunter could still be forgiven (there was metal sticking out all around in the cabin), then here one already wants more acoustic comfort. Cruise control also helps a lot on the highway, its values ​​​​are displayed on the on-board computer. You might be asking why I’m focusing on this. So, in the same L200, for example, the value of the set speed is not displayed.

Okay, I understand that the most suitable place for a Patriot is outside the asphalt. It’s early April weather outside. Snow, slush, somewhere how much, somewhere a lot of liquid mud. I got the car on winter tires without studs, which, in fact, are bald in the field.

It was decided to arrange two shooting days for UAZ, since at the beginning they promised frosty weather, and then a sharp warming, and it was clear that everything would flow and be much more insidious outside the asphalt. I report, the Patriot coped with everything. A la winter conditions were generally like asphalt for him, he playfully rolled across a snowy field, posing and scattering snow. And with the ESP turned off, it allowed me to “drift” around its own axis.

A few days later, the picture changed radically and became more interesting. The rear-wheel drive could no longer cope, but with all-wheel drive and with a clearance of 210 millimeters, the car coped with everything. I did not take him to any extreme sports, there was no desire to dig in the cold earth with snow, and the rubber was not for heroism. But on a field primer in a field with puddles, clay ditches, uphills and turns across the track, there were no problems. I even locked the rear differential only once. He’s really only on the rear axle. But there is a downshift. I turned it on to once again make sure that the potential for cross-country ability here is solid.

And what is the result? As a result, after all the off-road pleasures and, in general, a specific, I would say, peasant buzz from working with equipment, the UAZ had a jammed hand brake, and a tow truck was waiting for me to the dealer. But here you should not forget that all cars from the press parks are driven in the tail and mane. And somewhere far from major cities, it will be repaired for you in any service.

And look how it turns out. If I had no complaints about Hunter and everything was there for the sake of his entourage, honesty and simplicity, then here the Ulyanovsk plant tried to make a modern car. They equipped it with almost everything that the global auto industry offers today. In addition, this is really an SUV, and not some kind of crossover. But here and there questions arise, and now I want to ask the Patriot. For plastic, noise, for alien multimedia and, suddenly, as if the spirit of UAZ had left it. In general, he would need restyling, bring to mind the little things, make more USB connectors … although numerous tuners are happy to do all this today.

Well, about the machine, it was not in vain that I took it for the test. I didn’t have any questions here. It behaves generally adequately, there are no difficulties on off-road. So, if you do not want to work with your right hand and left foot on the mechanics, take the machine gun.

And evaluate the Patriot outside the asphalt, there will be a buzz. You can also load the trunk with camping belongings and go far from civilization.
