Even after 30 days of fighting, completed this Saturday (14), the fire that is affecting Serra do Cipó, in the city of Muquém de São Francisco, in the west of Bahia persists.
According to Major Murilo Rocha, who coordinates Operation Forestry 2024 in Bahia, weather conditions such as high temperatures, strong winds and low humidity further complicate the work of the Fire Department. To make matters worse, there has been no rain in the region since May.
According to the major, although the greatest difficulty in fighting the fire is in Serra do Cipó, the fire is also affecting cities such as Barreiras, Luís Eduardo Magalhães, Santa Rita de Cássia, Bom Jesus da Lapa and Serra do Ramalho, most of them in western Bahia.
Rocha also explained that, when a fire breaks out, teams move to start fighting it and that, when it is under control, there is another stage, called aftermath and monitoring, so that the fire does not spread.
There are 139 firefighters spread across five areas. Since July, the corporation has activated forest bases, dedicating all its efforts to controlling the flames in this region. Firefighters from Prevfogo, linked to the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Natural Resources (IBAMA), have also joined the military in recent days.
To help in the fight, new strategies, which began this Saturday, were planned.
“I would like to warn the population not to use fire in a discriminatory manner, without authorization, because more than 95% of the origin of these fires is human action, and this destroys our health and the environment”, concluded the major of the Bahia Fire Department.
