Hurricane Idalia made landfall near Keaton Beach in Big Bend, Florida as a Category 3 storm, with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph (190 km/h) and gusts even higher. It is the strongest storm to hit the region in over 125 years.
Other areas that should be hit in the state are: Apalachee Bay and Tampa Bay. At the end of the day, it must proceed to the state of Georgia.
Idalia is the third hurricane to hit Florida in the past twelve months, following Hurricane Ian in September 2022 and Hurricane Nicole in October 2022.
Even before the hurricane hit, more than 115,000 people were without power in the state. A most outages occurred in the Big Bend region. That includes Taylor County, with about 13,000; Dixie County, with about 10,000 outages; and Levy County, with about 8 thousand.
Earlier, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis urged residents of the state to heed warnings from emergency officials to protect themselves and “not play in these winds.”
“This level of storm is life threatening. Don’t go out in the middle of this storm. If it’s calm where you are, conditions can change very quickly. So wherever you are, hunker down and don’t take anything for granted here. This is a very, very powerful storm.”
“Just crouch down until she passes you. You don’t want to play with those winds. There will be things flying all over the place,” she reinforced.
