In an interview with CNNthe professor of International Relations at Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP), Lucas Leite, evaluated that, without the military support of the countries that make up the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Ukraine “will surely be somehow annexed ” by Russia.
This Friday (25), Russian troops advanced towards the capital Kiev. Follow the special coverage of CNN.
“When NATO decided and announced that it would not participate in the armed conflict, that it would not defend Ukraine militarily, we knew there was no way it could resist in the medium term”, he says.
“This war apparently starts in a conventional way, with common troops from one country against another, but at the same time we know that there are militias operating in the country, with the intention of the Ukrainian government to encourage the participation of the population, almost like a guerrilla” , he added.
The professor says he believes that the “ease of Russian troops” in invading the border demonstrates Ukrainian military fragility.
However, he says it is not possible to know, for now, what type of occupation will take place in the country: “It could be a general militarized occupation, almost like a civil war if the population rebels, or like Georgia, with the withdrawal of the president. elected to be replaced by a pro-Russian ruler”.
In this second configuration, for the professor, Ukraine would be “almost a Russian province”.
