Without vaccine for all ages, cases of Covid will increase, says infectious disease

The advance of the Ômicron variant of the coronavirus raises doubts about the return to normality in Brazil. The end-of-the-year parties – Christmas and New Year’s Eve – leave Brazilians even more afraid of what 2022 will be like: with an increase in Covid-19 cases and more restrictions or with a long-awaited end of the pandemic.

In an interview with CNN this Tuesday night (28), Hospital São Luiz Raquel Muarrek infectologist said that a scenario different from what is experienced in the country will now depend on complete vaccination for all age groups, in addition to booster doses to stop a increase in infections.

In the midst of the discussion about childhood vaccination against Covid-19, Murraek emphasizes that “it is important, now, to vaccinate and not crowd together to create resistance against the new variant”. “The vaccine brought us relief. It managed to reduce severity and mortality, including Ômicron. So, vaccinating all age groups will reduce the increase in cases”, said the doctor

For her, the relaxation in the face of the pandemic and the formation of agglomerations cause uncertainties. “The Ômicron circumvents our defense system, and this makes us see this increase in cases, generating concern about our time of resistance”, declared Raquel.

Last Friday (24), the Ministry of Health released a document recommending the vaccination of children aged 5 to 11 years against Covid-19.

According to a survey carried out by CNN, 20 states said they will not ask for a prescription to vaccinate children ages 5-11.

The understanding goes against what the Ministry of Health wants, which states that the immunization of this age group should be carried out with the permission of parents or guardians or with the presentation of a medical request.
