A judge from Argentina caused a stir as he was caught in the act by a CCTV camera kisses a man convicted of murdering a police officer whom he tried to save from life imprisonment.
Mariel Suarez, a judge in the southern province of Chubut, was caught kissing Cristian ‘Mai’ Bustos in jail near the town of Trelew on the afternoon of December 29.
Just a week earlier, Suarez had met with a panel of judges to decide whether Bustos should be sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Officer Leandro Roberts.
Suarez was the only judge on the panel to vote against the life sentence, although the lover was apparently described as an “extremely dangerous prisoner”.
What the judge did was not enough
Her disagreement was not enough to save the convicted murderer, who was sentenced to life in prison that began last week. Judge Suarez is now also being investigated by the Chubut Supreme Court for “misconduct” and faces possible sanctions.
Bustos was jailed for the 2009 murder of police officer Leandro Roberts in nearby Corcovado, who was shot dead while on his way to arrest Bustos after his earlier release from prison. The convict’s brother was killed and a second police officer was injured in that clash.
The Chubut Supreme Court said in a statement: “The judge is alleged to have been involved in misconduct. The investigation will seek to determine the circumstances of the meeting between this judge and an inmate who is considered extremely dangerous and who was recently convicted after a trial in the city of Esquel “.
