A 35-year-old woman was arrested on Wednesday (11) in Caruaru, in the interior of Pernambuco, under suspicion of pretending that her 10-year-old daughter had leukemia in order to collect donations. According to the Civil Police, the suspect told people that the child needed R$23,000 to undergo surgery due to the child’s alleged illness.
THE CNN the Civil Police reported that the woman was charged with fraud after the victims claimed to have fallen for a scam when making a donation via PIX to her account.
“She reported on social media that her daughter had a serious illness, with images of the child with shaved hair and eyebrows, thus asking for financial help to undergo surgery. After continuous investigations, the woman was located in the Nossa Senhora das Dores neighborhood, in Caruaru, and confessed that she knew about the illegality of her actions and was taken to the police station”, highlights the PCPE.
The fraud was only discovered after a local digital influencer shared the story on social media to help the family. After the story was shared, the woman’s relatives told the influencer that it was actually a scam.
