A woman was detained at Los Angeles International Airport with several prohibited items in a carry-on suitcase, including knives and more than 80 fireworks.
The passenger’s bag was flagged for search at the airport’s Terminal 4 after a security officer saw suspicious items in the x-ray machine on December 15.
Inside were 82 fireworks, three knives, two replica firearms and a can of pepper spray.
“The large number of prohibited items discovered in a single carry-on bag is extremely concerning,” Jason Pantages, federal security director for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at Los Angeles Airport, said in a statement. a press release.
“Let this incident serve as a reminder to all travelers to double-check the contents of their suitcase before coming to the airport,” he commented.
According to the TSA, the woman was carrying “consumer-grade” fireworks, which are generally weaker in explosiveness than fireworks used in professional displays.
Even so, explosives like fireworks are never allowed in luggage — whether checked or carried.
Knives, replica firearms and small amounts of pepper spray can be placed in checked bags for domestic flights in the United States.
The passenger, who was headed to Philadelphia, was questioned by police while the bomb squad confiscated the fireworks.
Passenger tries to carry contraband through Los Angeles airport
The woman in question is not the only passenger who has attempted to carry prohibited items through Los Angeles International Airport in recent weeks.
Over the Thanksgiving weekend of November 30, a California man allegedly attempted to check in two suitcases filled with meth-soaked clothing, including a cow onesie.
The suspect, who was booked on a United Airlines flight to Sydney, was arrested after customs officers detected “irregularities” in his luggage and searched his bags.
The TSA reports that 2.6 million people passed through airport security checkpoints in the United States on December 15, up from 2.5 million on the same date in 2023.
