A 44-year-old woman was found dead in a wooded area in the rural area of Chapecó, a city in the interior of Santa Catarina. The death and discovery of the body occurred last Saturday (3) and the delegate classifies the case as “emblematic”, since the corpse was close to a grave intended for another person.
Shortly after noon, the Scientific Police went to the scene and found that there were at least two gunshot wounds to the victim’s head. The body was five feet from the road.
“A large grave was also found approximately 100 meters from where the body was. We initially found that this grave was being dug by the victim herself and her current partner. The day before the murder, the couple had gone to the location to dig the grave that had already been under construction for two days,” explained police chief Eder Mate to the press.
The victim’s boyfriend, 30, was arrested on the same day and is being treated as the main suspect. He was arrested by the Military Police, had his arrest converted to preventive detention on Monday (5) and is currently in prison.
After the arrest, the officers took the man to the scene of the incident and he confessed that the grave was intended for the victim’s ex-husband. According to the suspect, the couple planned to lure him there to kill him and bury the body.
The man chose to remain silent during the interrogation and did not reveal the motive for his partner’s death. The Chapecó Homicide Department is investigating the case as femicide.
What do researchers know?
The victim and the suspect had been together since the beginning of 2024 and lived together in another part of the city, far from the rural area where the events took place.
According to the police chief, the victim’s ex-husband was questioned and released. During his statement to the police, he stated that they had a normal, relatively good relationship. The two were together for over 20 years and have a daughter together.
Using images from highway cameras, investigators were able to prove part of the suspect’s version that the victim was with him at the site where they dug the grave, both on the morning of the murder and the night before. On Friday (2), they spent about five hours digging. At 7:30 am on Saturday, the couple was seen going to the wooded area and then, at 11 am, only the suspect was seen in the vehicle leaving the site.
