Florida authorities have identified a woman found dead after an alligator was seen with a body in its mouth on Friday (22) near Tampa Bay in the US state of Florida.
Officers responded to a call in the city of Largo about an alligator in the water around 1:50 p.m. Friday. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday identified the victim as Sabrina Peckham, 41.
One witness, JaMarcus Bullard, told CNN affiliate Spectrum News 13 that he had seen a crocodile with a body in its mouth.
“I realized there was a body in his mouth, so I started recording,” Bullard said.
Officers humanely killed the animal from about 14 feet away, according to the sheriff’s office and the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Alligators have been seen in the area before, but resident Jennifer Dean told Spectrum News 13 she had never seen one this big.
“A lot of my neighbors were here and they were the ones who told me about the alligator,” Dean said. “While we were here we heard a shot. I assume they killed the alligator.”
