Air Mauritius flight crew could not believe their eyes when they heard a newborn baby crying through an airplane toilet. A newborn baby was found abandoned in the bathroom of the plane as apparently a woman gave birth during the flight and threw the boy in the bucket.
Authorities at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport found the newborn during a customs check, according to the BBC. A 20-year-old woman was arrested as a suspect in the case.
The woman initially denied being the mother of the baby, which was discovered when a New Year’s flight landed in the Mauritanian capital, Port Louis, after a trip from Madagascar.
The woman underwent an examination that proved that she had just given birth
However, the unknown mother was ordered to undergo a medical examination, which confirmed that she had just given birth to a baby, the BBC reported.
The woman, who arrived in Mauritius on a two-year work permit, has been placed under police surveillance at a local hospital, where she and her son are reportedly in good health.
She is expected to be charged with abandoning her newborn, the British agency said.
Reports of abandoned newborns on airplanes are rare, but a similar incident occurred in October 2020, when all female passengers on a Qatar Airways flight to Australia were forced to undergo vaginal exams after a baby was found in a toilet at the airport in the capital, Doha.
The incident at Hamad airport sparked widespread outrage after the women described their ordeal as a “state-approved attack”.
The country later apologized for the investigations, promised to guarantee the future “safety” of passengers and an airport policeman was given a suspended prison sentence.
