Oriini Kaipara, 37, is making history by becoming the first person with a Maori facial tattoo to host a primetime newscast. The journalist is paving the way for other Maori to be recognized for their talents, without having to put her roots aside.
Kaipara is in charge of presenting Newshub, a New Zealand newscast that airs at 6:00 pm. His arrival on the show was to replace previous presenters, Sam Hayes and Mike McRoberts. Although he has only been on the screen for a short time, his work and momentum are already leaving their mark and are recognized worldwide.
Oriini Kaipara is a talented journalist who is turning the tide of history by being the first person with a Maori facial tattoo to host a primetime newscast.
Although his talent, charisma and work are worthy of recognition, it has been his Maori tattoo on his chin that attracts the most attention from viewers. This is called moko kauae and it is commonly worn by Maori women.
Kaipara got the tattoo in 2017 after having a DNA test found to be 100 percent Maori. At first she was told by many that she shouldn’t do it, but genetic results and a love for her roots led her to make this important decision, of which she is still proud today.
On the other hand, Kaipara says that she is grateful for her new job as a news anchor, because for years, this was her dream and now she sees it fulfilled.
It is definitely a step forward. If there was a goal for me, it would be to present the news in prime time and that happened.
I’m not speechless, but it’s a buzz. I am proud of how far I have come to being the presenter at 6pm. It will be the first of many nights that I will have the honor of presenting top news to audiences across the country and around the world.
I do not take this challenge lightly and trust that the mana of my people will stay with me as I embark on this new journey for all of us.
It is worth mentioning that Kaipara had already made history in 2019 by being the first woman with a moko kauae in presenting a regular-time newscast (with little audience).
Kaipara is proof that all dreams are possible if we work to achieve them and, of course, that our roots will always accompany us, that is why we should be proud of where we come from.
