Woman who claims to be the “real Martha” from “Baby Reindeer” threatens to sue Netflix

Fiona Harvey who claimed to have been the inspiration for the character Martha, in “Baby Reindeer” from Netflix, released an open letter hinting at legal proceedings against the streaming platform.

In the plot, created, written and starred by Richard Gadd he plays a fictionalized version of himself being pursued by an older woman named Martha, played by actress Jessica Gunning after they meet in a pub in the Camden Town neighborhood of London.

The series has been critically acclaimed for its delicacy in approaching the topic of “stalking”, both from the perspective of the victim and the stalker, who, in this case, suffers from untreated mental health problems.

However, the popularity of the program piqued the curiosity of web detectives, who dedicated themselves to uncovering the identity of Gadd's real stalker, as well as that of an older comedy writer who had allegedly sexually abused him in the past.

Now, the woman, who was touted on social media as the real-life Martha, released a lengthy statement on Monday (20), saying she has “no doubt that the character Martha in 'Baby Reindeer' was intended to be a portrait ” yours, and that Netflix and Gadd chose to use it in a TV show, for their own financial benefit.

“No one has ever approached me to make any comment about the veracity of Baby Rena, or the very serious and damaging allegation that I am a convicted felon, with a serious criminal record, who has spent time in prison. No one has ever asked my permission to present myself in this way or to use my image,” she wrote in part.

“The media storm surrounding Baby Rena and my quick identification as the “real Martha” have caused incalculable damage to my health, my reputation, my employment prospects and my ability to make sensible decisions about my well-being and my best interests. This frenzy continues, with daily bombardments of calls seeking comment on stories of every possible type,” she continued.

Harvey said he is working with a legal team to take action against the alleged defamation of his story.

“With the help of a lawyer, Chris Daw KC, I am assembling a legal team in the UK and US to take legal action against all those who have lied about me and used my image to make large sums of money for themselves, with such harmful consequences for me and my family. Chris is not formally hired on my behalf and will not be making any statements of any kind to the media, regarding my position or any other media stories, until further notice,” he stated.
