The woman who took a dead elderly man to a bank branch in Rio de Janeiro to try to obtain a loan worth R$17,000 is, in fact, the individual's cousin. Initially, it was thought that she was his niece, as she referred to the man as “Uncle Paulo”. The case occurred last Tuesday (16).
Video recorded by a bank employee shows the corpse positioned in a wheelchair. His head was supported by the woman's hand, who was identified as Érika de Souza Vieira.
Although the woman calls the elderly man “Uncle Paulo”, delegate Fábio Souza, head of the 34th DP (Bangu), states that Érika is the cousin of the man, identified as Paulo Roberto Braga, aged 68.
“She is, in fact, his cousin. She calls herself a niece because she says that her mother's grandmother registered her mother as a daughter, so she would, in fact, be a niece. But the documents indicate that she is a cousin. Everything indicates that she really was his caretaker, responsible. We did several searches and were unable to find any of his relatives who were close to where he lives”, reports the delegate.
The police chief explained that Erika will be charged with attempted theft through fraud and vilification of a corpse. For now, the focus is on finding out the cause of death: if it is found that the reason was not natural, a homicide investigation will be opened.
The Civil Police reported, this Wednesday morning (17), that tests carried out on the elderly man's body indicate that the man had already been dead for at least two hours after the arrival of the Mobile Customer Service (Samu) at the bank branch.
The family's lawyer, Ana Carla de Souza Correa, said that “the facts did not happen as they were narrated, Mr. Paulo arrived at the banking unit alive” and that “Érika is completely shaken and drugged”.
The holder of the 34th DP still reports that Érika showed no regrets. “She always said that he was alive, that she always took care of him, but she never showed the sadness of someone who loses someone dear.”
