Women need to help other women report sexual harassment, expert says

In an interview with CNN this Sunday (19), criminal lawyer Cecilia Mello said that it is important for women to seek support and encouragement from friends, mothers or daughters to report any type of sexual harassment or episode of abuse.

“Women empower themselves along with other women. So, my first advice would be, look for other women, friends, mother or daughter. Or go to a Women’s Police Station. You don’t necessarily need to go to register an occurrence, you can go to chat and be sure of that record. The word is encouragement, as it is a disrespect for women’s dignity, their sexual dignity and their will, which is above anything else”, said Mello.

The lawyer commented on what happened during the reality show Big Brother Brasil. Program participants, from Rede Globo, MC Guimê and Cara de Sapato were expelled after the Jacarepaguá Women’s Assistance Police opened an inquiry to investigate sexual harassment inside the house.

Camera images show Guimê and Antônio Júnior, known as Cara de Sapato, forcing physical contact with Mexican model Dania Mendez, a visiting participant from the program “La Casa de Los Famosos”.

The expert also recalled that the typification of sexual harassment is recent in the penal code.

“This crime was typified in 2018 largely because of a symbolic occurrence in 2017, on public transport in São Paulo. The subject masturbated in the transport and ejaculated on top of a female passenger. It was in this context and the press played a very significant role in this new criminal type, as there was a great movement on top of this fact, ”he said.
