Despite the Oscars 2024 have several films with female narratives, the underrepresentation of women in awards remains a persistent problem.
In 96 editions of the award, only nine women were nominated for the “best direction” award, out of 474 nominees.
The award began in 1929, but it was only in the 49th edition, in 1976, that the first nomination of a woman in the category occurred, when Lina Wertmüller competed for the film “Pasqualino Sete Belezas”.
Furthermore, of the nine nominations, only three women received the statuette, while the other 93 were awarded to men.
This year, in fact, many people were surprised by the fact that Greta Gerwig was not nominated in the category for directing “Barbie”, as the film was a complete box office success.
Greta even became the first female filmmaker to surpass US$1 billion at the box office.
The non-nomination of Greta Gerwig's film in the category nor of protagonist Margot Robbie for “best actress” led internet users to speak of the Academy's contempt for the film.
In addition to “Barbie”, films such as “Anatomy of One Fall” and “Poor Creatures” reflect on female empowerment.
