Women stand out at the 64th Jabuti

The actress, poet and slammer from São Paulo, Luiza Romão, took the trophies for best book of the year and best work of poetry with “Também Guardamos Pedras Aqui”, by the publisher “Nós”.

“’I can’t believe it’ is perhaps the phrase I’ve repeated the most in the last few hours. With wide eyes, a lot of screams coming out of the mouth and a few trembles. I can only repeat: ‘I can’t believe it’”, said Luiza on her Instagram.

Luiza Romão is also the author of “Sangria” (2017) and “Coquetel Motolove” (2014).

THE first Literary Personality of the Jabuti Prize outside the Literature Axis

The philosopher and founder of Geledés – Instituto da Mulher Negra, Sueli Carneiro, was the great honoree of Jabuti this year.

“In many dreams I’ve had in my life, I never imagined the possibility of being honored with an award like this. It didn’t seem like something that could be within my reach. What moves us to write is indignation at injustice and oppression. And it is the indignation that reaffirms our humanity as fuel for our resistance, struggle and writing”, declared Sueli.

The prize

The 64th edition of the Jabuti Award took place on Thursday night (24). The Municipal Theater of São Paulo was the stage for the award for the first time. The place is a symbol of the Week of 22, which completed its centenary this year.

Since 1959, Jabuti has been held annually. Altogether there are 4 axes – Literature, Editorial Production, Editorial Production and Innovation. In this edition, women won in 13 of the 20 categories.
