Women with mental disorders are more vulnerable to suffering attacks, research shows

In 2021, 12,202 cases of violence against people with disabilities (PwD) were registered, according to data from the 2023 Violence Atlas, released by the Brazilian Public Security Forum this Tuesday (5).

Research carried out by the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea) shows that, in this group, women are the most attacked, as are people with mental disorders.

The most frequent violence faced by the group is physical (40.4%), psychological (23.0%) and sexual (16.3%).

Almost 70% of victims with disabilities are women, and around 20% are between 10 and 19 years old. The numbers show that higher rates of notification of violence against PwD are observed mainly in the group of individuals with intellectual disabilities, who register almost 28 notifications for every 10 thousand people with disabilities.

The notification rate for violence is 45.0 in intellectual PwD in women, compared to 16.2 among men. The discrepancy can be explained by the greater probability of reporting sexual violence.

The research also reinforces that one in three people with intellectual disabilities suffer sexual abuse in adulthood.

Between 10 and 19 years old, the number of notifications of extra-family or community violence against girls and women with disabilities (558) is more than triple the number of notifications of cases against boys and men (204).

Sexual violence in women and abandonment among the elderly

Violence of a sexual nature stands out among children and young people – it is most common in the age group between 0 and 9 years old (34.4%) and between 10 and 19 years old (44.8%), among people with a disability.

From the age of 60 onwards, neglect and abandonment are the most frequent form of violence reported, with increasing percentages as age advances: 41.8% in the 60 to 69 age group, 60.9% in the 70s. to 79 years old, and 66.7% among those aged 80 or over.
