The Women’s Defense Police Stations (DDM) in the state of São Paulo registered, between January and August this year alone, 65 thousand requests for urgent protective measures for victims of domestic and family violence. The number is equivalent to an average of a protective measure requested every five minutes .
According to data from the Public Security Secretariat (SSP), the number represents an increase of almost 57% in requests compared to the same period last year, when 41 thousand requests were filed.
Still according to the SSP survey, four out of every five victims of feminicide in the state in 2023 did not have protective measures . In around 75% of cases, no police report had been registered before the woman’s death.
This Thursday (10), when the National Day to Fight Violence against Women delegate Adriana Liporoni, coordinator of the Women’s Police Stations in São Paulo, highlights the importance of reporting in cases of domestic violence.
“It is a way to break the cycle of violence and prevent the repetition of acts of aggression. Protective measures serve to protect the victim in their physical, psychological, moral, sexual and patrimonial integrity, which are the types of violence recommended by the Maria da Penha Law”, states the delegate.
Among the measures, protective measures determine the restriction of contact and proximity to the victim, with the removal of the aggressor from the home. After requesting an urgent protective measure, the Court has 48 hours to decide on the request.
Reporting channels
The DDMs offer different channels for registering reports of cases of violence and requesting urgent protective measures: the territorial women’s police stations, DDM Online and the 24-hour DDM Rooms installed on police stations.
Currently, there are 141 physical women’s police stations throughout the state of São Paulo and 142 DDM Rooms that serve police duty.
In total, between January and August 2024, there were almost 108.6 thousand police reports made by DDMs, an increase of 17% compared to the same period in 2023.
In addition to the women’s police stations, anyone who feels threatened or is at risk of violence can call the Military Police 190 number. The corporation’s Operations Center (Copom) has the Lilás Cabin, which offers specialized assistance to victims of violence through trained military police officers.
Another tool is the SP Mulher Segura application. Available for iOS and Android systems, the SSP platform brings together features such as recording incidents and calling the Military Police.
For victims protected by protective measures, the application also provides a panic button for situations in which they feel threatened by the aggressor. Through georeferencing, the tool also cross-references the location data of the victim and the attacker who is monitored by an electronic ankle bracelet. If an approach is identified, the PM is called and a vehicle is dispatched to the location.
