The cylinder on the head, the scarf around the neck and the burgundy coat on the shoulders. Timothée Chalamet’s Willy Wonka stays true to Roald Dahl’s description, but adds the charm and freshness of an artist who, at just 25, has proven to have what it takes and charisma to sell. Sixteen years after Johnny Depp’s version and fifty years after Gene Wilder’s version, it will be Chalamet who will take on the role of the founder of the Chocolate Factory, the gruff and gloomy chocolatier who hides a great secret.
In this new version, which will be released in theaters on March 17, 2023 for Warner Bros., however, the story of Dahl will not be told, but that of Wonka before the events of the Chocolate Factory, a mechanism already used for films such as Maleficent e Crudelia.

Wonka, which will be directed by the director of Paddington Paul King , will see involved, in addition to Chalamet, many prestigious interpreters, from the Oscar winner Olivia Colman to Sally Hawkins, from Keegan Michael Key to Simon Farnaby. The screenplay is written by Simon Rich, while David Heyman, the producer of Harry Potter and of Fantastic Beasts as well as the two films by Paddington, will produce the film for Heyday Films.
“The suspense is terrible!” commented Chalamet, fresh from the international success of Dune by Denis Villeneuve, praised almost equally by audiences and critics around the world. For him Wonka means to compete with two great actors like Wilder and ex-father-in-law Depp (Timothée was, in fact, engaged to his daughter Lily-Rose) but, if there is one thing we have learned from seeing him in action, it is that he always has a card hidden to play at the right time. Certainly Wonka it will not be the only work by Dahl that we will see soon: it is Taika Waititi, the director of JoJo Rabbit, in fact, to think about a TV series inspired by the Chocolate Factory which we will see on Netflix.
