International Day of Forests is celebrated on 21 March to remind everyone of the importance of every single tree that constitutes the green lung of planet Earth.
Have you ever thought about how important trees are in our life? Maybe we don’t think about it enough, sure we don’t give it all the right credit. We take their daily presence for granted as well we reduce their importance purely to the ornamental aspect because we like to have them in our gardens, on the balconies or to see long tree-lined avenues in the streets of the cities.
First of all, our very existence is closely linked to that of plants, which produce – for free – the essential oxygen for all forms of life on this planet. Just a little stuff, a little thing in short. But let’s move on.
Trees interact positively with all the elements that make up the climate: temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure and precipitation. In addition to this crazy mitigating ability, plants have amazing potential as they are able to absorb the CO2 we produce in industrial quantities.
This is why woods and forests also play a fundamental role in our battle against global warming: as real ones “Natural purifiers”, purify the air, filtering pollutants harmful to health with its own hair. And if you please! The Amazon alone supplies about 20% of the fresh water that reaches the oceans of the globe. These waters influence the system of marine currents and therefore, the climate of the planet.
If you haven’t rolled your eyes yet at the phenomenal powers of these living organisms, just think that Forests are the most diverse ecosystems and host most of the biodiversity more than any other habitat: the Indonesian rainforest alone is home to a fifth of all terrestrial plant and animal life. There is probably more life in a handful of land in the subsoils of woods and forests than men on the face of the earth!
Thus woods, forests, parks and green areas in general help us to live. But we are killing them.
Like any superhero, even the forests have a bitter enemy, which threatens their existence and from which it is difficult to defend: man. Human activities are the kryptonite of the planet’s green lung. Deforestation continues at an alarming rate: more than 13 million hectares of forest are destroyed every year.
This is the time to panic, because the change is already underway and is largely irreversible.
