‘Words are good’, deeds are ‘even better’, says Paris in Moscow

France today called on Russia to move from “words” to “deeds”, following an order given by Moscow to Russian units, which have gathered near the Ukrainian border, to return to their barracks.

“I have noticed for some time now some fluctuations between my colleague (Sergei) Lavrov and the Minister of Defense (Sergei) Soigo regarding the resumption of the dialogue and the possible withdrawal of some military units,” said the head of the French Foreign Ministry, Le Blanc. before the French National Assembly.

“The words are good. We are waiting for the deeds. If the deeds are done, this will be even better,” the French Foreign Minister noted.

“Only dialogue will allow de-escalation, and that is the mission of the German chancellor (Olaf Solz) to Moscow today, in the hope that this will lead to a general debate on security guarantees in Europe,” he added.

France has warned Russia of “very severe sanctions” in the event of an attack on Ukraine and of strengthening NATO means on its borders if it increases its military pressure on new members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

“If Russia chooses to escalate despite the dialogue (…) very strict sanctions will be imposed immediately and we would proceed to the necessary reassurance actions in NATO with our allies,” Jean-Yves Le Drian stressed.
