A project carried out in the neighborhood of Afogados, in the west of Recife, caused problems for residents of several areas of the capital of Pernambuco. On Tuesday afternoon (14), a large pipeline, measuring 1,200 mm in diameter, was hit by machinery used in the intervention, interrupting the water supply to around 320,000 people in 30 neighborhoods in the city.
The Companhia Pernambucana de Saneamento (Compesa), responsible for supply, informed that the work is carried out by the Recife City Council.
The affected pipeline is one of the main sources of water supply in Recife, and, due to the accident, the supply was suspended in places such as Aflitos, Afogados, Bongi, Boa Vista, Coelhos, Graças, Ilha do Leite, Madalena and Santo Antônio. Compesa reported that the interruption could last until repairs are completed, and that a team was deployed to ensure the normalization of service.
According to the company, the company closed the valves to contain the flow of water and a team is assessing the damage.
“Technicians will diagnose the damage caused to the pipeline to define the services and materials needed for repairs and also estimate the deadline for the return of supply to the affected areas, a population of 320 thousand people”, explained the company in a note . The final diagnosis is expected to be completed by Wednesday afternoon (15), and repairs will begin this evening.

Compesa has not yet released an exact deadline for the complete restoration of supply, but reported that it is working to minimize the impacts on the population.
Recife City Hall stated that it requested Compesa to provide the region’s hydraulic plant. “In its response, the state company approved the interventions proposed by the municipality. Which, during the work for the foundation of a new municipal equipment, resulted in an accidental perforation of the hydraulic pipe”, explained the municipal administration.
