The Civil Police of Santa Catarina (PCSC) concluded this Wednesday (31) the police investigation that investigated the circumstances of the deaths of four people in a car at the Balneário Camboriú bus station. The owner of the workshop and the employee responsible for building and installing the equipment that modified the vehicle, a BMW, in which the four young people died were charged with four counts of manslaughter. According to the police, there was malpractice in carrying out the service.
The death of the four passengers, on January 1st of this year, was due to the inhalation of carbon monoxide that leaked through the rupture of a part, causing asphyxiation, concluded the Scientific Police. The car's component, called 'downpipe', entered the vehicle's cabin through the air conditioning.
The experts concluded that the part, which was installed to replace the vehicle's catalytic converter, was produced and assembled in a precarious manner and deviating from the manufacturer's quality standards.
The investigation also pointed out that the part of the car that broke was installed in a workshop in Aparecida de Goiânia (GO), in July 2023. The service was carried out by a 48-year-old individual, without any technical training, and under the supervision and control by the owner of the establishment, 35 years old.
The procedure was sent for analysis by the Judiciary and the Public Ministry.
CNN contacted the defense of the indicted workshop owner who stated that he had not yet received the indictment and, as soon as he was informed, he would speak out. CNN is also awaiting feedback from the Public Ministry.
