World Bank and IMF meet Ukrainian ministers on Thursday

The heads of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will meet with Ukraine’s prime minister and finance minister on Thursday to discuss further aid.

“We will have an important meeting on Thursday, where we will speak with the Prime Minister of Ukraine and the Minister of Finance. Some of the countries that are supporting Ukraine will be there, and we hope that both are providing assistance as they try to survive the battles,” World Bank President David Malpass said during a panel with IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva, who will also be there. present at the event.

He used hospital workers as an example of assistance and also said the meeting will look at how a phase of Ukraine’s reconstruction could be done “more effectively”.

IMF’s Georgieva said she spoke with President Volodymyr Zelensky over the weekend about “rebuilding” Ukraine, but also about keeping the economy going while the war was still going on.

She said there was a “duty” to support Ukraine over the next few months and that this would require more financial assistance than had already been given.

“We provided $1.4 billion in emergency funding, but more would be needed, and it would be a big investment in the coming months to keep the economy going and keep inflation from soaring,” said the head of the fund.
