Kabul-based World Bank group members and their first-degree relatives were evacuated safely from Afghanistan to the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, according to an internal memo from the Washington-based international financial institution. and came to the knowledge of the Reuters news agency.
The World Bank has not yet commented publicly on its plans or activities in Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover of Kabul on Sunday.
According to a report posted on Radio Pakistan’s website, Foreigners and Afghans belonging to World Bank staff as well as employees of other international organizations were among the 350 or so people who arrived in Islamabad from Kabul on a Pakistani Airlines (PIA) special flight.
Helicopters picked up 169 Americans from a hotel in Kabul
A U.S. military base in Afghanistan has deployed three helicopters to evacuate 169 Americans who were unable to reach Kabul International Airport, a Pentagon spokesman said Friday.
Three Chinooks left the safe perimeter of the airport and went to a hotel a short distance – about 200 meters – from there, the Baron, to pick up American citizens, clarified the Pentagon spokesman, John Kerby.
It is the first known case since the crisis that the US military has used its ability to move outside the airport to help people trying to leave the country after the Taliban seized power.
The group removing the helicopters intended to walk to the airport, but crowds made it difficult to access and caused concern among its members and US officials.
“It was not certain that they could penetrate,” Kerby explained. “The commanders in the field thus took the initiative to send helicopters to pick them up.”
In his speech earlier yesterday, US President Joe Biden had referred to the evacuation of 169 Americans, without going into details.
The U.S. military, which controls the airport to facilitate evacuation operations, has so far avoided leaving the perimeter to avoid any possible clashes with the Taliban.
