World beats record for Covid-19 cases in one week, according to WHO

With the advancement of the highly transmissible Ômicron variant, the world recorded a record number of Covid-19 cases in one week, reported the World Health Organization. Between December 27, 2021 and January 2, 2022, 9,520,488 new cases were recorded. infections, a 71% increase over the previous seven-day period.

However, even with the record, the number of deaths dropped 10%, which reinforces the protection offered by vaccines against the disease. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the world registers more than 5.4 million deaths by Covid-19, according to the WHO.

According to the Organization, the region of the Americas was the most affected by new cases of Covid-19 in the period, with an increase of 100%, but with an 18% drop in deaths. With a rise of only 7% in the number of new infections, Africa was the only region where the registration of deaths grew (22%).

With the update, the Americas and Europe are now the only regions with more than 100 million infections by the new coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic, with 104,698,449 and 103.190,471 respectively.

This week, WHO said the increase in cases is related to the spread of Ômicron, but studies have shown that the variant causes milder symptoms of Covid-19.

And the number of new cases on the planet is also on the rise this week. This Wednesday (5), 2.59 million new infections were recorded worldwide, a new record, according to the organization Our World in Data. The number surpassed the 2.4 million cases registered the day before.
