The world hit a new daily record of Covid-19 cases this Tuesday (11).
In the last 24 hours, the world recorded, according to the platform Our World in Data, 3.28 million new infections by the coronavirus.
It is the first time that the daily pandemic record exceeds 3 million.
The mark surpasses the previous record, reached on the 5th, when 2.59 million cases of Covid-19 were registered in one day.
The growing number of infections is linked by experts to the spread of the Ômicron variant, which is more easily transmitted than previous forms of the virus. According to forecasts by the World Health Organization (WHO), it is expected to become the dominant strain in several parts of the world in the coming weeks.
The number, released this Tuesday (11), was pulled by the United States, which again recorded more than 1 million daily cases. There were 1,483,656 new infections in the last 24 hours, according to Johns Hopkins University.
The number represents a new record in the country, which had counted about 1.1 million cases on Monday (3) of last week. In total, the US has recorded 61,558,085 infections with the new coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic, handily leading the world ranking.
American health authorities attribute the advance of Covid-19 to the Ômicron variant. According to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the new strain already accounts for about 60% of infections in the country.
Hospitalizations for Covid-19 have worried American authorities. According to data from the Department of Health and Human Services, more than 141,000 Americans are hospitalized with the disease, very close to the record of 142,246 seen a year ago.
Despite the growth in cases, the number of deaths is lower than at other times of the coronavirus pandemic – 6,383 were counted in the last 24 hours. The record for deaths in one day was recorded on January 26, 2021, with 17,442.
On January 4, the WHO incident manager, Abdi Mahamud, stated that the entity sees evidence that Ômicron, although more transmissible, can cause milder symptoms. “We are seeing more and more studies pointing out that Omicron infects the upper part of the body. Unlike the others, which can cause severe pneumonia,” he said.
Vaccination, according to experts, is still the most effective way to prevent serious infections, deaths and hospitalizations from Covid-19, and keeping the vaccination schedule up to date is essential.
