BEAUTY GLOSSARIO GREEN ORIENTED

Aware that sustainable choices affect the collective well-being and what will be bequeathed, there are many beauty brands that were born in the last period already with a Clean DNA, in Italy and in the world. But what exactly does that mean clean beauty? And what is the difference between sustainable, cruelty free, organic, non-toxic? In order not to get confused, here is the definitive glossary on clean beauty terms:

Clean: the term refers to the concept of sustainable beauty. Clean beauty is in fact the new trend followed by cosmetic brands to make their products more consciously, choosing recyclable packaging and formulas free of ingredients considered by many experts to be potentially harmful to the skin and the environment (for example paraffin, silicones, chemical dyes).

Ecological: is a label used to describe a product or brand that is committed to protecting the environment, for example by helping to minimize pollution and waste levels with recycled packaging and non-toxic ingredients, supporting sustainable agriculture or reducing the carbon footprint.

Sustainable: like ecological indicates brands that are taking steps to ensure that their products are made responsibly, which means that they are grown, harvested and transported with little impact on the natural landscape, atmosphere or its ecosystems.

Vegan: For a cosmetic to be defined vegan, it must not contain traces of animal derived ingredients, even if extracted without damaging them. Usually classified with VeganOk, these formulations cannot contain substances that are not ethical and must, therefore, respect the environment.

Natural: products are natural if some (or all) of the ingredients are found in nature, they are not transformed or processed. Natural ingredients can also be refined in the laboratory, in which case they are no longer technically “natural” but are instead described as “of natural origin”.

Fragrance-free: means that the product does not contain additional fragrances (natural or synthetic) which can often irritate the skin, especially sensitive skin. It should be noted that “fragrance-free” is not the same as “odorless”, as the product may still contain fragrances as a by-product of some of its natural ingredients, such as shea butter or olive oil.

Biological: if a product is organic, it means that at least some (but perhaps not all) of the ingredients have been organically grown. Therefore no genetically modified organisms (GMOs), herbicides, synthetic fertilizers or pesticides have been used to protect the fauna of the agricultural area and ensure that the ingredient remains in its “purest” form.

Non-toxic: if a product is labeled as non-toxic, it means that it does not contain ingredients that are harmful to health. These include phthalates, PEGS, parabens, lead acetate, formaldehyde, petroleum and tar. However, this term isn’t regulated, so it’s still important to read the ingredients list to be safe.

Cruelty-Free: it means that a product or its ingredients have not been tested on animals at any stage of the production and manufacturing process.
