An offshoot of al-Qaeda has called on Muslims around the world to turn their backs on the World Cup in Qatar, but without threatening to attack the event.
Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, an offshoot of the Yemen-based terrorist group, criticized Qatar for opening the door to “immoral people, homosexuals, sowers of corruption and atheism.”
The event aims to distract attention from the “occupation of Muslim countries and those who oppress them,” according to a statement released by SITE Intelligence, a day before the World Cup kicks off on Sunday.
The country hosting this year’s World Cup has been criticized for human rights violations, including among the LGBTI community.
Responding to the backlash, Doha assured that everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, is welcome at the event.
Qatar, a small country with a population of 3 million, most of them expatriates, had announced that it had trained more than 50,000 people in the safety of the games, an effort for which it also cooperates with foreign countries.
