World Cup: electricity consumption changes during national team matches

On matchdays for the Brazilian team in the Qatar Cup, in addition to services and traffic, the electricity network also undergoes changes. Despite the large concentration of the population in front of TV sets, many work activities, such as those in the industrial and commercial sectors, are interrupted, and this significantly influences the load behavior of the National Interconnected System.

The last Bulletin of the National Electrical System Operator (ONS) showed that, shortly before the start of the match against Cameroon, there was a 7% drop in consumption, compared to usual, which represents a reduction of around 6,000 MW.

During the break, there was a rapid load increase of 2% in six minutes, influenced by a small movement of people and the use of household appliances such as microwaves, electric fryers, popcorn makers and refrigerator and freezer motors.

At the end of the game, an abrupt elevation ramp begins with a 9% increase in 30 minutes, an increase of 6,300 MW — corresponding to the sum of the average loads of the state of Rio de Janeiro and the Federal District, which together have approximately 20 million inhabitants (10% of the Brazilian population).

According to the National System Operator, due to the ups and downs in energy consumption during the games, strong preparation is required on the part of the planning, load forecasting and operation programming teams to ensure that the intense load ramps are properly monitored by corresponding variations in generation and use of voltage control resources.

The objective is to guarantee the least possible impact on the quality and safety of the electricity supply in the SIN.
