World Esports Federation Creates Metaverse Council

The Global Esports Federation has formed the Metaverse Council to focus on shaping initiatives to develop the virtual space.

Global Esports Federation (GEF) CEO Paul J. Foster reportedthat the Council will include blockchain experts, collectible token (NFT) developers and media personalities.

“We established the GEF Metaverse Council to cultivate ideas, voice opinions, shape our metaverse reality, and access limitless opportunities for our entire community,” Foster said.

The board was chaired by Flare Internet Protocol CEO Hugo Philion. Filion sees great promise in integrating esports into the metaverse.

“Esports represents limitless potential and a whole world of opportunities for blockchain,” he said.

Council Vice Chairman Melvin Kuek noted that there has been a lot of debate around the concept of the metaverse and whether it will be well received by the gaming community in the long term.

“Every time the metaverse is mentioned, three words come to mind: game, community and inclusion,” he stressed.

However, not all game studios are ready to implement blockchain and NFT in their products. In April, popular gaming content developer Activision Blizzard announced that it has no plans to add support for collectible tokens in games yet.

At the beginning of the year, Nicolas Pouard, vice president of the Strategic Innovation Lab at Ubisoft, one of the world’s largest video game publishers, said that players are not yet realizing the benefits of NFT integration.
