The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tentros Adanom Gebregesous, announced today that he had met with the Taliban government’s health minister to discuss the health and humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, which he described as “catastrophic”.
Tetros clarified that this meeting with Kalader Ebad, who is participating in a Taliban delegation in Geneva for discussions with institutions and NGOs on access to humanitarian aid and the issue of human rights in Afghanistan, took place yesterday, Tuesday.
Tetros had already met with Kalader Ebad during his visit to Kabul in September 2021, in the wake of the Taliban takeover in mid-August.
“This visit is neither a legitimization nor a recognition” of the Taliban regime, which has not been recognized by any country at the moment, insisted a representative of the Swiss Foreign Ministry (DFAE).
“We also discussed progress in educating girls at all levels, including higher education, the support (which will be provided) for them to join the health workforce,” the WHO chief said.
“The WHO calls on the international community to continue to support the Afghan people through dialogue in order to improve the health and well-being of all Afghans,” Tentros said.
A spokesman for Médecins Sans Frontières confirmed a meeting with the Taliban “during their stay in Geneva to discuss current medical needs and our plans”. He stressed that MSF, which has a long presence in the country, has been in contact with the Taliban Ministry of Health for many years.
Ever since the Taliban took power after the withdrawal of US forces, a terrible economic and financial crisis has threatened to starve more than half the population of Afghanistan. The cessation of international aid has sparked a humanitarian crisis in the country, which has been ravaged by decades of war.
