World Health Organization: Teenagers’ addiction to social media is worrying – 11% show signs of “problematic use”

The use of social media by young Europeans is becoming increasingly “problematic”, putting them at risk of developing an addiction to online games, the World Health Organization said today. “We need to take immediate action to help teenagers stop the potentially harmful use of social media, which has been shown to lead to depression, bullying, anxiety and poor school performance,” commented WHO Europe Director, Hans Kluge, in a statement. In 2022, 11% of teenagers (13% of girls and 9% of boys) showed signs of “problematic use” of social media, up from 7% previously, according to data collected from a sample of 280,000 young adults 11, 13 and 15 years old, from 44 countries in Europe, Central Asia and Canada.
