World Hug Day, this year is more important

Keep your distance. We have to remember it every day, an always active reminder, an alarm that punctually rings, which reminds us to stay away and that we forget. We forget it instinctively. We knew it before, but today we remember it more than ever: we are made to be close, to feel each other. We are made to touch our hands, to get to know each other, to converse looking at the mouths. We are made to embrace.

Today January 21 is the National Hugging Day, a day that not surprisingly falls every year close to Blue Monday, the saddest day of the year, the third of January, which all readers fortunately survived earlier this week.

The international day of hugs is presented every year punctually, as an antidote to the saddest day, to remind us of the importance of the most universal of all gestures of affection. And how can we forget it? We will also remember 2020 for this, because hugging was forbidden.

Hugging reduces stress more than stroking, stress decreases even more than kisses, and more than kisses it communicates desire for passion and desire. An exercise that psychologists suggest to couples in crisis is “the A-shaped hug”, The distant bodies, you lean forward and join your hands above your head, forming an A, then you remain there, close but without touching, feeling the desire for contact, which grows. And isn’t this perhaps the most exhaustive summary of what we have lived: a year apart, wanting to get closer, without being able to do it, a year spent standing in an A-shaped embrace? This is probably the most important lesson we have learned, the one about closeness, affection, and contact, and how we are made for it.

And if we already know the power that hugs have as a gesture of affection, perhaps what we don’t know is how much this is also the most powerful signal of passion and desire. As explained by the American psychologist David Schnarch, in his book “The psychology of sexual passion”, the hug is the most powerful of all the gestures of love, it is in the hug that all the desire for contact is enclosed, it is with the hug that the barriers of the soul are broken down.

Today we can only imagine the hugs we would like to give, tender, deep, warm, we can draw up a list, and promise to tick it all off, and then really do it. Because we have never been more aware of this hunger for contact, and as soon as possible we will run the risk of asking for them all, the hugs we want. And how strong will those we give will be.

In this National Hugging Day, we will experience the hugs in the films, remaining bewildered at the sight of the actors who hug, without thoughts or masks, and what we can do is to experience that feeling, through the images that flow, and get excited, remembering the importance of this gesture, which we’ll do it soon. For now the most famous hugs of cinema in the Gallery!
